About

Renowned flautist, Susan Milan discovered the charming Popp Sonatinas Op. 388 while researching 19th-century Flute repertoire in the British Museum Library. These beautifully crafted works are all, without exception, a delight to play and suitable for a broad level of player. They are a lovely example of Classical style and detailed in a way that makes them a joy to perform and as they are less than 10 minutes long, they are a perfect addition to a short recital programme.

Susan Milan has undertaken meticulous editing of the Sonatinas, ensuring a refined and cohesive flute part. By addressing discrepancies in articulation markings between the flute and piano parts, she has brought consistency and clarity to the compositions. Recognising opportunities to enhance the lyrical character of certain sections, she has thoughtfully incorporated additional slurs. Furthermore, Susan has diligently added staccato markings in instances where they were previously absent, further refining the musical expression of the pieces.

Composer-Wilhelm Popp

German composer, Wilhelm Popp (1828-1903) was a talented flautist and pianist. He wrote over 600 works, many of them for the flute. Popp studied under Caspar Kummer and Louis Philippe Drouet. In 1860, he became Principal Flute of the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra. During this time, he composed an array of virtuosic works for flute based on Verdi’s Rigoletto Fantasie, Liszt’s solo piano paraphrase and ‘La Traviata’ Waltz amongst others.
