Popp Sonatine Opus 388 Series-Flute and Piano-Spartan

Renowned flautist, Susan Milan discovered the charming Popp Sonatinas Op. 388 while researching 19th century Flute repertoire in the British Museum Library. These beautifully crafted works are all, without exception, a delight to play and suitable for a broad level of player. They are a lovely example of Classical style and detailed in a way that makes them a joy to perform and as they are less than 10 minutes long, they are a perfect addition to a short recital programme.

Wilhelm Popp studied with the great Louis Drouet in the 1850s and wrote many charming works for the Flute, this among them. Susan Milan, acclaimed soloist and teacher, has edited this elegant edition.

Replaces the old edition HE35 from Hunt Edition.

First published in Hamburg in 1888. In editing the Sonatinas, Susan Milan has tidied some of the articulation, making the Flute part consistent. Discrepancies between markings in the Flute and Piano part have been corrected. She has occasionally added some slurs where the lyrical nature of a section might be enhanced and staccati have been added where it appears to have been missing. On the whole, expression marks have not been added, or changed original markings.

During her long career as orchestral principal, recitalist, soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, lecturer and teacher, flautist Susan Milan has researched and performed a broad repertoire in all genres. This is reflected in Flute Notes, an essential handbook for flautists, which presents programme notes and clearly presented core information for over 200 composers and 500 works. Advice on programme planning, and practical lists of composers and dates, makes this book an invaluable resource for the performer as well as the academic. Susan Milan is a Professor and Fellow of the Royal College of Music, London, Professor of Trinity laban Conservatory of Music, London and Director of the annual British Isles Music Festival. http://www.susanmilan.com

German composer, Popp Wilhelm (also going by the name of Guillaume Popp and the pseudonym Henry Alberti) (1828-1903) was a talented flautist and pianist and wrote over 600 works, many of them for the flute. He studied under Caspar Kummer and Louis Philippe Drouet. During 1860, he became Principal Flute of the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra. During this time, he composed an array of virtuosic works for flute based on Verdi’s Rigoletto Fantasied, Liszt’s solo piano paraphrase and ‘La Traviata’ Waltz amongst others.
