Martin Sonata Da Chiesa-Flute and Organ-Universal Edition
About
Sonata da chiesa pour viole d’amour et orgue was composed in 1938. From there emerged a version for flute and organ in 1941, one for oboe d’amore and organ in the same year and one for viola d’amore and string orchestra in 1952. In addition, there are two different versions for flute and string orchestra, one prepared by Victor Desarzens authorised by the composer (1958) and one made in 1993 by Gunnar Cohrs.
Composer-Frank Martin
He composed a vast number of orchestral and chamber works, religious/secular vocal pieces and a range of instrumental compositions amongst others. Martin wrote a number of ballades for different instruments, but his favourite medium to write for was the voice.
Martin’s style of composition incorporates intensely lyrical melodic lines with constantly changing harmonies in the bass. Neither tonal nor atonal in the strict sense, he combines both conservative and avant-garde musical ideas, with French/German traditions and influences.
In the thirty-four years until his death in 1974, eighty-five of his compositions appeared under the Universal Edition label.
