About
This virtuosic piece for flute and piano was composed in 1939 and is now an integral part of the modern flute repertoire. Martin cleverly combines intense lyrical melodies with quick-paced rhythmical acrobatics in both the flute and piano parts, combining various contemporary styles.
Composer-Frank Martin
He composed a vast number of orchestral and chamber works, religious/secular vocal pieces and a range of instrumental compositions amongst others. Martin wrote a number of ballades for different instruments, but his favourite medium to write for was the voice.
Martin’s style of composition incorporates intensely lyrical melodic lines with constantly changing harmonies in the bass. Neither tonal nor atonal in the strict sense, he combines both conservative and avant-garde musical ideas, with French/German traditions and influences.
In the thirty-four years until his death in 1974, eighty-five of his compositions appeared under the Universal Edition label.
