Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was a renowned Russian composer, widely regarded as one of the most beloved and influential in the history of classical music. With a career spanning from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, Tchaikovsky left an indelible mark on the musical world.

Tchaikovsky’s compositions were characterised by their captivating melodies, rich harmonies, and vivid orchestration. Throughout his lifetime, he crafted an extensive body of work, including seven symphonies, eleven operas, three ballets, five suites, three piano concertos, a violin concerto, numerous overtures, choral works, chamber music, and a plethora of songs and piano pieces.

During the 1870s, Tchaikovsky composed his monumental Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, the emotionally charged opera “Eugene Onegin,” and the brilliant Violin Concerto in D Major. In the 1880s, Tchaikovsky he composed his epic Symphony No. 5 in E Minor and the sumptuous ballet “Swan Lake,”.

In his final years, he composed his Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, also known as the “Pathétique,” which is regarded as one of his greatest works. Tragically, he passed away shortly after its premiere in 1893, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most brilliant and influential composers in history.

Georges Bizet-Composer

French composer Bizet (1838-1875), stands as one of the most gifted musicians of the 19th century/Romantic era.

He studied at the Paris Conservatoire from the tender age of ten, where he demonstrated his skills as a prodigious pianist and composer. Bizet studied with Charles Gounod and was later influenced by Italian composers such as Donizetti and Rossini.

During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, Bizet won an array of prizes including the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1857.

Bizet composed an incredible thirty operas during his short lifetime, many of which remained unfinished. Some of these operas included  Pearl Fisher and The Fair Maid of Perth, but his most famous opera was Carmen. This opera incorporated famous Spanish melodies including the Habanera and Toreador songs. Bizet sadly died three months after Carmen’s premiere, which has become one of the most popular and frequently performed works in the opera repertoire.
