Tchaikovsky Album for Children-Flute and Piano-Universal Edition

Arranged for flute and piano by Ulrich Muller-Doppler and Peter Ludwig
Magic Flute on Stage

Young flautists will love these touchingly lyrical miniatures and almost virtuosic dance pieces arranged for flute and piano.

“Tomorrow I am going to write a collection of miniatures for children. For some time I have been thinking it would be good to alleviate the dearth of musical literature for children.” (From a letter Tchaikovsky wrote to Nadezhda von Meck on 30 April 1878)

Tchaikovsky subtitled his collection of piano pieces for children as “Collection of easy pieces in the style of Schumann.” Although Tchaikovsky studied the flute, he did not compose any music specifically for it. However, numerous miniatures from the Album for Children are wonderfully suited for the flute, ranging from the expressive and romantic Morning Prayer and Sweet Dream to the technically demanding Mazurka and Neapolitan Song.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was a renowned Russian composer, widely regarded as one of the most beloved and influential in the history of classical music. With a career spanning from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, Tchaikovsky left an indelible mark on the musical world.

Tchaikovsky’s compositions were characterised by their captivating melodies, rich harmonies, and vivid orchestration. Throughout his lifetime, he crafted an extensive body of work, including seven symphonies, eleven operas, three ballets, five suites, three piano concertos, a violin concerto, numerous overtures, choral works, chamber music, and a plethora of songs and piano pieces.

During the 1870s, Tchaikovsky composed several iconic compositions, such as his monumental Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, the emotionally charged opera “Eugene Onegin,” and the brilliant Violin Concerto in D Major. These works solidified his reputation as a masterful composer and brought him international recognition.

In the 1880s, Tchaikovsky continued to produce masterpieces, including his epic Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, which delved into themes of fate and destiny, and the sumptuous ballet “Swan Lake,” the first in his renowned trilogy of ballets. These works demonstrated Tchaikovsky’s ability to weave complex narratives through music, captivating audiences worldwide.

In his final years, he composed his Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, also known as the “Pathétique,” which is regarded as one of his greatest works. Tragically, he passed away shortly after its premiere in 1893, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most brilliant and influential composers in history.
