Title-Grands Exercises Journaliers De Mecanisme pour flute
Publisher’s reference: AL17204
Book Type: Paperback

This renowned book of daily exercises for flute by distinguished French flautists,  Paul Taffanel and Philippe Gaubert has remained one of the top flute methods in the flute repertoire.

This method is designed to be performed daily to maintain and strengthen technique and tone, with the importance of the purity of the sound encouraged. Taffanel and Gaubert have combined a series of challenging scalic and arpeggiated exercises covering the entire range of the flute, with varied articulation and changing keys.

Advice is given in four languages: French, English, German, and Spanish at the beginning of this method.

Paul Taffanel began writing ’17 Grands Exercices Journaliers de Mécanisme’ in collaboration with Philippe Gaubert. Upon Taffanel’s death, Louis Fleury and Philippe Gaubert (Taffanel’s former students)completed this method. Gaubert became the second most recognised French flautist and composer (after Taffanel).

Philippe Gaubert

French musician, Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished flautist, respected conductor, and composer, primarily for the flute. He held a prominent career as a flautist with the Paris Opéra. He later established himself as a Professor of flute at the Conservatoire de Paris (professor of Marcel Moyse), Principal conductor of the Paris Opéra and Principal conductor of the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire.

Gaubert composed an array of music for flute including three sonatas, Madrigal, Divertissement Grec, Sonatina, Berceuse, Deux Esquisses, Two Romances, Sur L’Eau, Suite, Nocturne and Allegro Scherzando, Fantasie and Ballade. The latter three pieces were used for the annual Paris Conservatoire Concours.

Paul Taffanel

French composer and renowned flautist, Paul Taffanel studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Vincent Dorus, graduating in 1860. He built a dazzling career as a solo flautist and orchestral player and was regarded as one of the foremost flute players of his generation. In addition to his flute-playing career, Taffanel also conducted the Paris Opera and The Société des Concerts du Conservatoire.

Regarded as the founder of the French Flute School, Taffanel revised the Paris Conservatoire’s repertoire and teaching methods when he became Professor of Flute at the Conservatoire in 1893. His pupils learnt to play in a new, smoother style with a light and carefully controlled vibrato.

Taffanel composed an array of music for flute including Andante Pastoral et Scherzettino,  Grande Fantaisie sur Mignon, Fantasy on ‘Der Freischütz (after von Weber), Fantaisie sur Françoise de Rimini, for flute & piano (after Ambroise Thomas), Fantaisie sur Jean de Nivelle, for flute & piano (after Léo Delibes) and Fantaisie sur Les Indes Galantes, for flute & piano (after J.P. Rameau).
