65 Progressive Studies

About

This is the first volume of a progressive series of study books that takes the young wind player from beginner to accomplished musician.

The early stages of learning any instrument are undoubtedly the most important. A good teacher is of course essential but it is also vital to have stimulating study material, which complements your choice of teaching method and is carefully tailored to introduce learning and playing skills in a structured manner.

In writing these studies, I have spoken to many teachers to determine the best way to introduce new notes to the young player while at the same time providing a framework to introduce new musical elements in a logical order to facilitate speedy growth of the ‘complete musician’.

Specifically tailored for each instrument, this collection of 65 studies offers a choice of starting note to suit individual tastes and carefully introduces new musical elements, such as articulation, dynamics and key signatures, in a structured progression to speed the learning process.

Philip Sparke

Philip Sparke, born in London, is a versatile composer who studied composition, trumpet, and piano at the Royal College of Music, earning an ARCM degree. During his time at the College, he developed a keen interest in bands and actively participated in the College wind orchestra. He also formed a brass band with fellow students and began writing compositions for both ensembles.

As his music gained popularity, Sparke received various commissions, including a major one for the Centennial Brass Band Championships in New Zealand, resulting in “The Land of the Long White Cloud.” His talent earned him further commissions from different bands, band associations, and the BBC. Notably, he won the EBU New Music for Band Competition thrice with his compositions “Slipstream,” “Skyrider,” and “Orient Express.”

Sparke’s association with Japanese banding led to a special commission, “Celebration,” and a recording with the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, expanding the reach of his wind band music worldwide. The United States embraced his works with numerous commissions and recognitions, including the prestigious Sudler Prize for “Dance Movements.”

Apart from his accomplishments as a composer, Sparke is also an active conductor and adjudicator, sharing his expertise in many countries worldwide. In 2000, he founded his own publishing company, Anglo Music Press, dedicated to publishing his compositions for brass band, concert band, fanfare band, and instrumental works, along with recordings of his latest pieces.

Throughout his career, Philip Sparke has received numerous awards and honours, recognising his significant contributions to brass music. He continues to make a significant impact on the world of band music as a respected composer, conductor, and educator.
