Erwin Schulhoff

Schulhoff (1894-1942) was a prominent Austro-Czech composer and pianist. He was born on 8 June 1894 in Prague and displayed remarkable musical talent from a young age. Antonín Dvořák’s letter of recommendation helped him secure admission to the Prague Conservatory at the age of ten, where he studied piano and composition. Schulhoff continued his education in Vienna, Leipzig, and Cologne, under the guidance of renowned musicians.

During World War I, he served in the Austro-Hungarian army and later settled in Germany. There, he became intrigued by avant-garde movements like Dadaism and jazz, incorporating these influences into his compositions. After returning to Prague, Schulhoff worked as a music critic and embraced Social Realism, composing symphonies with a political touch. However, his Communist convictions and Jewish heritage made it challenging for him to continue his career in Germany after 1933.

As the Nazi regime rose to power, Schulhoff faced increasing difficulties. In Czechoslovakia, his communist sympathies caused further problems. His musical adaptation of The Communist Manifesto showcased his strong political inclinations. Forced to perform under a pseudonym, he struggled to make ends meet and sought refuge in Prague. In 1941, he was granted Soviet citizenship but was arrested and imprisoned before he could leave Czechoslovakia.

Erwin Schulhoff tragically died from tuberculosis on 18 August 1942, while interned at the Wülzburg prison. His talents and potential as a composer were cut short by the oppressive political climate of the time. The rediscovery of Schulhoff’s compositions began in 1988, and his works, such as the jazz-inspired H.M.S. Royal Oaks and the symphonic jazz pieces, are now appreciated as innovative and groundbreaking contributions to the classical music genre.
