About

Newly engraved and formatted with a clean look of this classic flute book with editorial comments and direction by Carol Wincenc.

Reichert composed “Daily Exercises for the Flute,” also known as “Exercices Journaliers,” a highly regarded collection of exercises for flute players. These exercises have become a go-to resource for advanced flautists seeking to develop their technical abilities and master the instrument. The exercises cover a wide range of aspects related to flute playing, including scales, arpeggios, intervals, articulation, and more. They are carefully structured in a progressive manner, allowing flautists to gradually enhance their skills and fluency on the instrument.

Reichert’s “Daily Exercises” are considered an essential resource for advanced flautists. By incorporating these exercises into their daily practice routines, flautists can strengthen their playing abilities, improve their tone production, develop finger dexterity, and enhance overall musicianship.

Mathieu André Reichert

Mathieu André Reichert (1829/30 – 1880) was a Belgian-Brazilian composer and flautist known for his virtuosity and influence on Brazilian music. Born in Maastricht, Belgium, he played in cafés as a child and became a professional flautist.

Professor Jules Demeur and François-Joseph Fétis recognized his talent and brought him to the Brussels Conservatory, where he excelled. At 17, he won the Conservatory’s first prize and played in the Belgian court. Internationally acclaimed, he performed across Europe and the United States.

In 1859, Emperor D. Pedro II invited European virtuosi to Brazil, including Reichert. He became the first flautist of the Teatro Provisório, touring various cities and gaining disciples like Manoel Marcelino Vale and Duque Estrada Meyer.

Reichert befriended Brazilian flautist Joaquim Antônio da Silva Callado Jr., and his compositions, like “La Coquette,” reflected Brazilian musical style.

He also introduced the modern Boëhm system for the transverse flute, expanding its possibilities.

Sadly, Reichert died in poverty from meningoencephalitis, just days before Callado, and was buried in Cemitério de São João Batista, Rio.
