Anton Joseph Reicha

Reicha was a Czech-born composer and music theorist. He was educated in Bavaria and later became a naturalized French citizen. Reicha is most renowned for his significant contributions to the wind quintet repertoire and his influential role as a teacher. Notable students who studied under him include Franz Liszt, Hector Berlioz, and César Franck. Reicha was also a respected music theorist, authoring several treatises on composition and experimenting with innovative techniques such as polyrhythm and polytonality. Despite his groundbreaking ideas, they were not widely adopted by his contemporaries.

Born in Prague in 1770, Reicha’s musical journey began when he ran away from home at a young age and was adopted by his uncle, Josef Reicha, a talented cellist and composer. He received a comprehensive education in music, studying various instruments and composition.

In 1785, the family relocated to Bonn, where Reicha joined the court orchestra and befriended Ludwig van Beethoven. He continued his studies in composition secretly, eventually immersing himself in the vibrant musical scene of Vienna, where he studied with renowned teachers such as Antonio Salieri and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger.

In 1801, Reicha moved to Paris and achieved recognition as a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris. His teaching legacy extended to notable students like Charles Gounod and Pauline Viardot.

Reicha remained in Paris for the remainder of his life, becoming a naturalised French citizen in 1829.
