About
This sonata was originally composed for solo violin. Written in 1947, the Soviet Union’s Committee of Arts Affairs commissioned Sergei Prokofiev to compose a pedagogical work for talented violin students. Despite, the title ‘Solo’, the piece was actually designed to be played by multiple violinists in unison. This work was first performed in 1959, by Ruggiero Ricci at the Moscow Conservatoire.
Composed in a largely classical style, the first movement follows sonata form, the second, a theme and five variations, and the third movement has characteristics of a mazurka.
This solo violin sonata has been arranged for solo flute by Petrucci.
