Gabriel Pierne

Henri Constant Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937) was a notable French composer, conductor, pianist, and organist.

He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, excelling in solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint, and fugue, and was awarded the prestigious French Prix de Rome in 1882 for his cantata Edith. Pierné’s teachers included Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, César Franck (for organ), and Jules Massenet (for composition).

He served as the organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris from 1890 to 1898, following in the footsteps of César Franck. Later, he became the chief conductor of Édouard Colonne’s Concerts Colonne series in 1910.

An important moment in his career was conducting the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s ballet The Firebird at the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1910. He remained in the chief conductor position until 1933.

Pierné made several recordings for Odeon Records, conducting L’Orchestre Colonne between 1928 and 1934, including performances of his own compositions, such as Ramuntcho and excerpts from his ballet Cydalise et le Chevre-pied.

His extensive oeuvre encompassed operas, choral and symphonic pieces, and a variety of chamber music. One of his most famous compositions is the oratorio La Croisade des Enfants, based on Marcel Schwob’s book. He also gained popularity for shorter works like March of the Little Lead Soldiers and Marche des Petits Faunes from his ballet Cydalise et le Chèvre-pied. Additionally, his Introduction et variations sur une ronde populaire for saxophone quartet is considered a standard in the saxophone quartet repertoire.
