About
Krzysztof Penderecki’s Concerto for flute and chamber orchestra begins not with the flute soloist, but rather the clarinet. The clarinet part is a prominent feature in the ensuing dialogue between the solo flute and orchestra.
Following a highly expressive Andante, a breathless race breaks out between the flute and the accompanying instruments. Penderecki’s final marking, ‘Total eclipse of the moon’, announces the lyrical conclusion of the work in which the music gradually fades out like the moon taking refuge behind the shadow of the earth.
