In the late 1980s, Bickford “Bick” Brannen devised the Oston–Brannen flute as a response to an extended wait list—stretching over two years—for a full Brannen instrument. Developed as a distinct side venture and not produced within the Brannen Brothers workshop, it was nevertheless available via Brannen’s ordering channels. The design patterns of this flute subsequently formed the basis for the Brannen Millennium and served as the foundation for the Brannen/Kingma quarter-tone flute. After Bick sold Brannen Brothers, he retained ownership of these patterns; they were utilised in the Avanti model by Conn-Selmer, and eventually transferred to Lev Levit, whose flutes continue to trace their heritage back to the original Oston–Brannen design.
