About

“Opus di Jazz” was written in 1997 as a “sequel” to Sonata Latino.” This three-movement sonata is designed to be performed by classical musicians, yet it evokes the essence of improvising jazz musicians in action.

The first movement, “Cartoons (Shuffle),” draws inspiration from an old melody initially composed for a cartoon series. With a lively 12/8 shuffle feel, it allows for double-time flute lines and concludes with a striking piano contribution.

In the second movement, “Ballad,” the focus shifts to an integrated interplay between the flute and piano. The piano solo pays homage to the legendary Bill Evans, seamlessly leading into a flowing flute solo. A quasi-classical treatment of the flute cadenza guides the return to the main theme.

The third movement, “Bluebop,” lives up to its name by presenting a blues structure adorned with bebop and hard-bop chord changes. It commences with three choruses of unified “improvisation” before the flute leads into the main theme with a walking bass line. As the composition progresses, the piano explores the realm of McCoy Tyner. A brief appearance of the first movement’s theme sets the stage for a concluding unison line, culminating in a bluesy flute cadenza.
