Darius Milhaud

Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a prominent French composer known for his innovative use of polytonality, blending different keys simultaneously.

Born into a Provençal Jewish family, Milhaud studied under Paul Dukas and Vincent d’Indy at the Paris Conservatory. He was part of a group of young composers called Les Six, as recognized by the critic Henri Collet. Later, he became a professor at Mills College in California and then taught at the Paris Conservatory.

Despite battling crippling arthritis in his later years, Milhaud continued to compose and conduct. His distinctive style is evident in ballets like L’Homme et son désir (Man and His Desire) and Le Boeuf sur le toit (The Nothing-Doing Bar), as well as in La Création du monde (The Creation of the World).

Milhaud composed music for various theatrical works, including Claudel’s Protée and translations of Aeschylean tragedies. His operas include Christophe Colomb, Le Pauvre Matelot (The Poor Sailor), David, and Médée.

Around 1913, Milhaud embraced polytonality, using bitonality and polychords in his music. He was the first to consistently develop and analyze this technique. Despite simplifying his style, later on, he maintained the polytonal foundation.

With a prolific output, Milhaud composed over 400 works, including symphonies, choral pieces, film scores, and chamber music. His songs included settings of poems by various authors. He also wrote an autobiography titled “My Happy Life” in 1995.
