Bohuslav Martinu
Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1959) was a Czech composer known for blending French and Czech influences in his music.
He began studying violin at a young age and joined the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in 1913. His ballet “Istar” and symphonic poem “Mizející půlnoc” (Vanishing Midnight) achieved success in 1922. He furthered his education under Josef Suk and Albert Roussel.
During the German invasion in 1940, Martinů fled to the US, teaching at Princeton University and the Berkshire Music Center. He stayed there until 1957, serving as a composer in residence in Rome.
His orchestral works, like “Half-Time” and “La Bagarre,” drew inspiration from contemporary events. Notable pieces include the powerful “Double Concerto” expressing Czech suffering after Czechoslovakia’s partition, and the poignant “Memorial to Lidice,” commemorating Nazi victims.
Martinů’s prolific career included symphonies, concerti, string quartets, and compositions for piano, harpsichord, voice, cello, and violin. His music combined Czech folk charm with French Neoclassical clarity.
