Biagio Marini

Biagio Marini (1594-1663) was an Italian virtuoso violinist and composer during the first half of the seventeenth century.

Born in Brescia, Marini possibly studied under his uncle Giacinto Bondioli. His printed works were influential across Europe. He travelled extensively, holding positions in Brussels, Neuburg an der Donau, Düsseldorf, and Venice. In Italy, he was associated with Monteverdi’s group at St. Mark’s Cathedral and performed in various cities, including Padua, Parma, Ferrara, Milan, Bergamo, and Brescia. He married thrice and had five children. Marini passed away in Venice.

His compositions encompassed both instrumental and vocal music, but he is renowned for his groundbreaking instrumental pieces. He expanded the violin’s performance range, incorporating techniques including slurs, double and triple stopping, and the first explicitly notated tremolo (in the sonata La Foscarina, op. 1 No. 14; 1617). He was among the early composers, following Marco Uccellini, to advocate for scordatura tunings. Marini made contributions to various contemporary genres and explored unconventional compositional methods, such as creating a sonata without a cadence (as in his Sonata senza cadenza).

Alongside his violin compositions, he wrote music for instruments like the cornett, dulcian, and sackbut.

One modern advocate of Marini’s music is the British violinist Andrew Manze, who released an album titled “Curiose e moderne inventioni” on the Harmonia Mundi label, dedicated to Marini’s string music.
