Friedrich Daniel Rudolf Kuhlau

Kuhlau (1786-1832) was a Danish pianist and composer who played a significant role during the late Classical and early Romantic periods.

Kuhlau excelled as a concert pianist and composer of Danish opera, and he also introduced Beethoven’s works to audiences in Copenhagen. Despite losing all his unpublished manuscripts in a house fire, he left a remarkable legacy of over 200 published works across various genres. Many of his compositions were dedicated to the flute, even though he didn’t personally play the instrument.

Born in Germany, Kuhlau moved to Hamburg to pursue piano studies and made his debut as a concert pianist. In 1810, he sought refuge in Copenhagen to avoid conscription in the Napoleonic Army and established himself as a piano teacher and composer. He later became a non-salaried musician in the Danish Court and obtained Danish citizenship.

Known for his flute compositions, Kuhlau was often referred to as “the Beethoven of the flute” during his lifetime. His piano sonatinas and flute works remain widely performed and recorded today.

The International Friedrich Kuhlau Flute Competition has been held since 1970 in honour of the composer.

Jean-Pierre Rampal (1922-2000) renowned French flautist toured internationally, recorded a vast array of works involving the flute and in later years, took up conducting.

Rampal won a place to study at the Paris Conservatoire and later founded the French Wind Quintet before becoming Principal Flute of the Paris Opéra (1956–62). In 1968 he took up the post of Flute Professor at the Paris Conservatoire.

He enhanced the status of the flute as a concert instrument through his vast number of recordings from Baroque masterpieces to jazz. He was particularly known for his authentic interpretations of 18th Century music and for his editing skills with the music of the Baroque period.

Rampal’s autobiography, ‘Music, My Love’, was published in 1989.
