Emily Beynon

Emily Beynon, a renowned flautist, has held the position of principal flute in the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam for over 25 years. Hailing from Wales, she began her flute studies at the Royal College of Music under the guidance of Margaret Ogonovsky. She further honed her skills with William Bennett at the Royal Academy and Alain Marion in Paris.

Emily is equally comfortable performing as a concerto soloist with esteemed orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Orchestras, NHK Symphony, the Vienna, Prague, Netherlands, and English Chamber Orchestras, and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. She is also a dedicated chamber musician, frequently collaborating with her sister, the harpist Catherine Beynon, and the pianist Andrew West. Her performances have been featured on radio and television documentaries, and she has released 12 concerto/recital albums, including her latest series of 5 Project Paloma discs with Andrew West, showcasing flute and piano masterworks from the Second World War.

In addition to her performances, Emily actively champions new music and has inspired composers such as John Woolrich, Sally Beamish, Jonathan Dove, Errollyn Wallen, Roxanna Panufnik, and Maarten Ornstein to create works specifically for her. As a passionate and dedicated teacher, Emily is regularly invited to give masterclasses worldwide. From 2009 to 2021, she served as the Artistic Leader of the Netherlands Flute Academy. In response to the 2020 pandemic, Emily established a YouTube channel featuring video tutorials on technical aspects of playing and various orchestral repertoire solos.

Ernesto Köhler

Italian flautist and composer, Köhler’s (1849-1907)

Ernesto Köhler (1849-1907) was an accomplished Italian flautist and composer. His contributions as a composer for flute are noteworthy, including over 100 works for the flute including études, duets, and solos. Kohler also composed several operas and ballets.

From Modena, Köhler received flute lessons from his father, Venceslau Joseph Köhler, who held the position of the Principal Flute in the Duke of Modena’s orchestra. In 1869, he ventured to Vienna where he began his career as a flautist. Later, he joined the Imperial Opera Orchestra in Saint Petersburg in 1871.

Among flute players, he gained recognition for his widely appreciated ‘Flute School’ (“Flöten-Schule” circa 1880), a popular flute learning method. Additionally, his Opus 33, “Progress in Flute Playing,” a series of three progressive instructional books for flautists published in the 1880s, became highly regarded.

Interestingly, Köhler also made connections within the mandolin community. He is credited with creating an early mandolin method called “Mandolinen Schule, self-instructor for the mandolin,” which was first published in 1887.

In 1856, he moved to Paris, working as a flautist and composer. From 1859 to 1861, he gave concerts in Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Austria. From 1871 to 1895, he taught flute and composition at the Lycée Jacques-Decour in Paris.
