Johann Christian Bach

Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782), known as the “English Bach,” was a prominent composer in the early Classical period. He received early training from his father, J.S. Bach, and likely his cousin, Johann Elias Bach. After his father’s death in 1750, he collaborated with his half-brother, C.P.E. Bach, in Berlin. At 20, he travelled to Italy and studied under Padre Martini in Bologna. His compositions, though immature, showed promise in a serious and mostly liturgical style, gaining him a generous patron due to his grace and tactfulness.

J.C. Bach converted to Catholicism and became the organist of Milan Cathedral in 1760, which caused some estrangement from his strongly Lutheran family. He then focused on opera, composing successful Italian operas for the King’s Theatre in London starting in 1762. Alongside operas, he produced orchestral, chamber, and keyboard music, solidifying his position in the music scene.

In 1772, he became the music master to Queen Charlotte and her children, enjoying both musical and social success. His influence extended to composers like Mozart, who learned from and respected Bach. His symphonies and sonatas played a pivotal role in shaping the early Classical symphony and keyboard concerto.
