About

Musical interpretation is first and foremost a question of shaping a melody or the melodic line of a setting. Music, like any language, follows its own set of rules and sufficient knowledge and familiarity with musical ‘grammar’ is therefore an essential prerequisite of any convincing interpretation. The internationally renowned performer and teacher Peter-Lukas Graf explains in great detail the parameters that have to be taken into account for a successful interpretation: rhythm, metre, agogics, articulation, phrasing, ornamentation and implied polyphony, etc. Numerous examples from the flute repertoire of the 17th–20th century serve as models from which he derives the ‘rules’ appropriate for an interpretation in keeping with each period. These rules are not intended to be dogmatic but should stimulate the players to form their opinions.

Peter-Lukas Graf

Peter-Lukas Graf (1929-) was born in Zürich, Switzerland. He pursued flute studies with André Jaunet in Zürich, Marcel Moyse, and Roger Cortet in Paris. Graf earned the First Prize as a flautist and the Conductors Diploma at the Conservatoire Nationale de Paris.

For three years, he honed his skills in conducting in Munich. Graf’s talent was recognized when he won the First Prize at the International Music Contest of the ARD in Munich and the Bablock Prize of the H. Cohen International Music Award in London.

At a young age, Graf was appointed the principal flautist at the Winterthur Symphony Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, where he also took on conducting responsibilities. He later focused on full-time opera and symphonic conducting.

At 21, Graf’s recording of the Ibert Flute Concerto brought him international acclaim. Since then, he has toured globally, made numerous recordings, and performed at various international music festivals.

For over 20 years, he served as a professor at the Basle Music Academy and continues to conduct master classes worldwide.

Graf’s contributions to music education extend beyond teaching. He has written four didactic monographs, and in recognition of his achievements, he received the title of doctor honoris causa from the Academy of Music Cracow and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the USA National Flute Association in 2005. Additionally, the Italian FALAUT Association awarded him the Premio alla Carriera Flauto d’Oro.
