Composer-Philippe Hurel

Hurel has received numerous honours throughout his career, including the Pensionnaire à la Villa Médicis à Rome (1986-88), the Förderpreis der Siemens-Stiftung in Munich (1995), the Prix des Compositeurs from SACEM (2002), and the Prix de la Meilleure Création de l’Année from SACEM (2003). Apart from composing, Hurel has worked as a music researcher at IRCAM and taught composition there from 1997 to 2001. He co-founded the new music ensemble Court-circuit in 1990 and currently serves as its artistic director. Since 2013, he has been teaching composition at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon.

Hurel’s music has been performed by notable orchestras and ensembles under the baton of esteemed conductors such as Pierre Boulez, David Robertson, and Ludovic Morlot, among others. His compositions span various genres and have been premiered at renowned festivals and venues worldwide. Notable premieres include his opera Les pigeons d’argile at the Capitole de Toulouse, his orchestral cycle Tour à tour at Radio France/Festival Manifeste/Ircam, and his works premiered by esteemed ensembles like Arditti Quartet, Diotima Quartet, and Les Percussions de Strasbourg.
