Antoine Hugot

Antoine Hugot (1761-1803) was a French flautist, professor, and composer from Paris. He received instruction from a Creole musician named Atys and gained recognition as a flute soloist at the Concerts Spirituel in the 1780s. In 1789, he became the principal flautist in the newly established Parisian orchestra “Bouffons italiens,” under the direction of Giovanni Battista Viotti. Hugot joined the music corps of the Garde Nationale of Paris in 1793 and was appointed as one of the four flute professors at the newly founded Conservatoire de Paris in 1795. Tragically, in 1803, Hugot took his own life by jumping from a fourth-floor window.

Hugot’s compositional legacy includes six flute concertos, duets for two flutes, sonatas, and studies. In 1804, his colleague Johann Georg Wunderlich published the instructional work “Méthode de Flûte du Conservatoire par M.M. Hugot et Wunderlich / Membres du Conservatoire,” based on Hugot’s preliminary work.
