‘As the Transverse Flute is one of the most pleasant and fashionable instruments, I deemed it necessary to undertake this little work to support the inclination of those aspiring to play it. I dare to hope that my effort will not be entirely unworthy of the curiosity of those with a taste for this instrument, as my main goal is to smooth the initial difficulties that usually pose the most challenge.
One can thus learn the Principles of the Transverse Flute with the help of this Treatise. I provide demonstrations for producing all the natural tones, sharps, and flats, along with an explanation of how to adjust them. I also instruct on creating all the Cadences on these same tones and, finally, what embellishments are necessary to play properly and tastefully. These rules and demonstrations may even compensate for the lack of instructors for many individuals who have a natural inclination to play this instrument but lack knowledge of its principles.
There is also a Treatise on the Recorder or Flute; in addition to a comparison of the Transverse Flute and the Oboe, which can serve as a method for learning to play the latter instrument. I do not address the value of the notes or the measure here; these are matters more suited to a treatise on music than to a treatise on the flute.’
