About
This popular solo flute work by Arthur Honegger was written in 1921 as incidental music for dancer Lysana who featured in Sacha Derek’s play ‘La Mauvaise Pensée’.
The opening ‘Lent’ section begins with a slow and entrancing introduction, giving the air of a somewhat improvisatory feel. This leads into the lively ‘Danse Vif’ 9/8 section, representing the ‘dancing goat’. The calmer ‘Lent’ section returns once more at the end of this piece.
In a letter to his mother dated 19 November 1921, Honegger wrote that he had a “commission for a bit of music for a play which is going on at the start of December at the Nouveau Théâtre. A little dance for the dancer Lysana”. The work had its première on 2 December 1921, as part of a play by Sacha Derek called La Mauvaise Pensée, within which Danse de la chèvre gave rise to a true choreographic event. Composer-Arthur Honegger
Arthur Honegger (1892-1955) was a composer associated with the modern movement in French music during the first half of the 20th century. Born to Swiss parents, he spent most of his life in France. Honegger studied at the Zürich Conservatory and later at the Paris Conservatoire from 1912.
After World War I, he became part of Les Six, a group of young composers that included Georges Auric, Germaine Tailleferre, Francis Poulenc, Darius Milhaud, and Louis Durey. Honegger showcased his unique style in works like the dramatic psalm “Le Roi David” (1921) and the orchestral pieces “Pacific 231” (1924) and “Rugby” (1928). His music from the 1920s featured rhythmic and dissonant elements with a sense of freedom in tonality.
Honegger composed extensively, contributing to opera, ballet, choral music, and orchestral music. His compositions also extended to chamber music and film scores. His bold and uninhibited musical style combined French avant-garde harmonies with the grand forms and rich sounds of the German tradition. In 1951, Honegger published his autobiography titled “Je suis compositeur” (I Am a Composer).
