In 1863, he studied at the Paris Conservatoire Godard under Henri Vieuxtemps (violin) and Napoléon Henri Reber (harmony). His compositional output included eight operas, five symphonies, two piano concertos, two violin concertos, string quartets, violin and piano sonatas, piano works and a multitude of songs.
