Paul-Agricole Génin

Génin (14 February 1832 – 22 December 1903) was a notable French flautist and composer renowned for his contributions to flute music. Born in Avignon, Génin studied under Louis Dorus and went on to become the first flute at the Théâtre-Italien (Comédie-Italienne) in Paris.

He held the position of Principal Flute at both the Theatre Italien and the Colonne Orchestra. Génin’s compositional output was significant, with over 60 works composed specifically for the flute, establishing him as a prominent figure in the flute repertoire. Notably, he was among the first composers to write for the saxophone as well.

Génin was recognized for his artistic achievements and was appointed as an “Officier de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts”.

His notable works include the Carnaval de Venise, Opus 14, a fantasia and variations for flute and orchestra, which also has a reduction for flute and piano. Additionally, he composed the Fantasia on Themes from Verdi’s “La Traviata” for flute and harp, as well as the Fantaisie sur “Faust” de Gounod No.1 for flute and piano.
