Anton Bernhard Fürstenau

Anton Bernhard Fürstenau (1792-1852) was a renowned German flautist and composer. He was considered Germany’s foremost flautist of the Romantic era. Fürstenau’s influence extended to his son Moritz Fürstenau, one of his many students. Despite advancements in flute technology, Fürstenau remained loyal to the traditional nine-keyed flute throughout his life.

Fürstenau received his initial flute training from his father, flautist Kaspar Fürstenau. At a young age, he performed publicly and later joined the Oldenburg State Court Orchestra. Concert tours with his father took him to Berlin, Munich, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Vienna, and Prague, where he met Carl Maria von Weber and developed a lasting friendship.

In Frankfurt, Fürstenau became a member of the municipal orchestra and received further instruction in harmony and composition. He then joined the court orchestra in Dresden under von Weber’s leadership. Fürstenau continued his concert tours to Denmark, Bavaria, Paris, and London with von Weber.

Fürstenau composed numerous works, primarily for the flute. His etudes were widely used in classrooms, and he wrote articles on musical styles. His compositions were influenced by Carl Maria von Weber. Notable works include his Concerto for flute and orchestra No. 8 in D major Op. 84.

As a prominent figure in German Romantic flute-playing, Fürstenau was the Principal flautist in the Dresden orchestra. He favoured the traditional German keyed flute, allowing his son to study the ring-keyed flute with Theobald Boehm.
