About

Originally composed for violin and piano, this Sonata was subsequently adapted for flute and piano. The piece commences with an ‘Allegro ben moderato,’ showcasing a delicately rendered high melody in triple time.

In the second movement, marked ‘Allegro,’ the piano takes the spotlight, though it features a slower middle section. A brief ‘Recitativo-Fantasia’ follows, demonstrating seamless integration and interplay between both instruments before gently fading away. The final movement, ‘Allegretto poco mosso,’ exudes a resounding and assertive character, accentuated by a persistent melody.

César-Auguste-Jean-Guillaume-Hubert Franck

César Franck (1822-1890) was a composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher, born in Liège, Belgium. He studied privately in Paris with composer, Anton Reicha and later embarked on his career as an organist and teacher in Paris.

Recognised for his role in infusing French music with the emotional depth and technical solidity of German composers, Franck demonstrated remarkable musical abilities from a young age. He embarked on a successful career as a pianist and composer, with compositions that showcased his serious and expressive style.

Franck’s notable works include the Symphony in D Minor, Variations Symphoniques, and Sonata in A Major for Violin and Piano.

Throughout his life, Franck’s dedication to his craft was unwavering. Despite initial pursuits as a performer, he gravitated towards composition and organ playing, earning recognition and admiration for his works. Franck’s compositions, characterised by soaring melodies and a touch of improvisation, exemplify his musical maturity in his later years. His impact on French music, particularly in the second half of the 19th century, is evident in the depth and emotional intensity of his compositions, solidifying his position as a prominent figure in the Romantic movement.
