Richard Flury
Richard Flury (1896-1967) was a renowned Swiss composer and conductor. He received composition training from Hans Huber in Switzerland and Joseph Marx in Vienna. Upon returning to Switzerland, he honed his conducting skills under Felix Weingartner in Basel and then became a music teacher at his alma mater, the Solothurn Canton School, where he dedicated over 30 years of his life until 1961. During this time, he also conducted the Solothurn City Orchestra from 1919 to 1949, led various local orchestras and choirs, and taught violin.
Flury was a prolific composer across multiple genres, starting his musical journey around 1911 and continuing until his passing. His compositions predominantly embraced the neo-Romantic tradition. Notably, his repertoire comprises four operas, four violin concertos, five symphonies, seven string quartets, eight masses, 11 violin sonatas, and around 180 songs. In addition to his music, he penned an autobiography titled “Lebenserinnerungen” (1950), which provides insight into his life and includes comprehensive lists of his works.
His son, the talented musician and composer Urs Joseph Flury (born 1941), established the Richard Flury Foundation in 1996 as a centennial tribute to honour his father’s musical legacy.
