Jindřich Feld

Feld (1925-2007) was born in Prague to a musical family and studied violin, viola and composition. He later furthered his composition studies at the Prague Conservatory and Academy of Music (HAMU). His father was a well-respected professor of violin at the Prague Conservatory and his mother was a violinist. In the same year, he earned his doctorate from Charles University in Prague, specializing in musicology, aesthetics, and philosophy.

Feld held notable positions in his teaching career. He was a Professor of Composition at the Prague Conservatory from 1972 to 1986. He also served as a guest professor at Adelaide University in Australia in 1968 and 1969. Additionally, he delivered guest lectures at Indiana University in 1981 and 1984 and taught at various American, European, and Japanese universities.

Feld’s extensive catalogue includes over two hundred titles, showcasing a diverse range of compositions. His works span orchestral scores, such as the opera for children “The Postman’s Tale” (1956) and the cantata “Cosmae Chronica Boemorum” (1988), as well as chamber music and choral works. Notable pieces include the widely performed and recorded Concerto for Flute and Orchestra (1954), commissioned by Jean-Pierre Rampal. The Sonata for Flute (1957) has become a standard repertoire piece for virtuosos. Feld’s aesthetic influences evolved throughout his career, initially aligning with Martinů and the French school of Debussy, Messiaen, and Honegger. He also found an affinity with the French side of Stravinsky and Prokofiev, as well as the ethnic influences of Bartók.

Among Feld’s internationally renowned compositions is the Fantasy Concertante for flute, string quartet, and percussion (1980), commissioned by Jean-Pierre Rampal and premiered in Paris. His Symphony No. 3, “The End of the Century,” debuted in Prague in 1998. Feld made significant contributions to classical music, leaving behind a rich legacy of compositions.
