Stephen Dodgson

Dodgson was born in London in 1924 and spent most of his life there. He studied at Stowe and served in the Royal Navy during World War II. He received his musical education at the Royal College of Music and taught theory and composition there for many years. Initially, he worked in the Junior Department, conducting the orchestra and composing pieces for it. In 1950, he received a scholarship to travel to Italy.

From 1957, he frequently worked with the BBC, providing incidental music for major dramas and presenting music reviews and discussions. Dodgson’s compositions span various genres, including opera, piano sonatas, string quartets, chamber music, symphony orchestra pieces, concertos with chamber orchestra, vocal music, and works for wind and brass ensembles. His music for the guitar, inspired by Julian Bream, is particularly well-known internationally.

Many of Dodgson’s works have been recorded, including orchestral essays, string quartets, string sextets, clarinet and flute quintets, piano sonatas, bagatelles, piano trios, chamber and vocal music, and a significant portion of his guitar music.
