Publisher’s Description

Marc-André Dalbavie’s beloved Concerto for Flute is now available as a solo with piano reduction and was originally only available for solo flute and orchestra.

Allmusic.com describes the concerto as “…a surprisingly lyrical work, full of elegant turns of phrase and impassioned melodies. Its harmonic language hovers between tonality and atonality, but its effect is largely post-Romantic; this is a work that offers strong and direct emotional appeal to audiences. Formally, it’s fairly conventional, with fast-slow-fast movements that are played without a break, but its lyrical, sensuous slow section makes up about half of its length.”

Marc-André Dalbavie

French composer, Dalbavie (1961-) studied orchestration under Marius Constant and conducting under Pierre Boulez at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris.

He was actively involved in musical research at Ircam from 1985 to 1990, exploring digital synthesis and computer-assisted composition. Dalbavie lived in Berlin from 1992 to 1993 and was a resident at the Villa Médicis in Rome from 1995 to 1996. He served as the resident composer with the Orchestre de Paris from 2001 to 2005 and began teaching orchestration at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris in 1997.

He has been commissioned by prestigious orchestras worldwide, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, Orchestre de Paris, and BBC Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, he has received commissions from esteemed musical institutions such as Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, The Proms in London, the Aspen Festival, the Marlboro Festival, and the Cité de la Musique in Paris.

Dalbavie’s compositions focus on timbre and electronically generated sound, often tailored to specific venues, challenging traditional concert settings.
