Ten articles about flute literature, flute playing, flute making and flautists by Jane Bowers, Nikolaus Delius, David Lasocki, Karl Lenski, Betty Bang Mather, Peter van Munster, Mirjam Nastasi, Rineke Smilde, Karl Ventzke and Frans Vester.

Composer-Frans Vester

Frans Vester (1922-1987) was a highly regarded teacher, editor, and scholar. He was also the founder and artistic leader of the Danzi Woodwind Quintet (1958-1970) and made significant contributions as a performer, particularly known for his expertise on historical flutes.

He studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory, enrolling at the young age of 15. Four years later, he showcased his talent by premiering the Ibert Concerto there. In 1958, the Danzi Quintet premiered Schoenberg Wind Quintet Op. 26.

Throughout his career, he embarked on tours and recordings of baroque repertoire alongside notable musicians including Frans Brueggen and Gustav Leonhardt. His contributions extended beyond performing, as he dedicated his expertise to editing numerous flute compositions from the 18th and 19th centuries. Additionally, Vester compiled valuable repertoire catalogues that served as essential resources for flute players.

Rien de Reede-Flautist

Rien de Reede (1942-) was flautist in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra for over thirty years. Before joining the orchestra, he served as co-principal in the Amsterdam Philharmonic and as a freelance solo flute with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. Additionally, he held the position of Professor of Flute and Chamber Music at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

Throughout his career, Rien de Reede actively participated in various chamber music groups, including the Viotta Ensemble of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Quartetto Amsterdam, a quartet for flute and strings. Notably, he was a key member of the celebrated Netherlands Wind Ensemble for over a decade, touring extensively in the USA, England, and alongside Steve Reich and his musicians.

Rien de Reede’s main interest lies in eighteenth- and twentieth-century music, leading to collaborations with esteemed Dutch composers like Rudolf Escher, Theo Loevendie, and Tristan Keuris, as well as international composers such as Isang Yun, Jean Françaix, Gottfried Michael Koenig, and Per Nørgård. His musical achievements include numerous CD recordings and performances of flute concertos by Vivaldi, Mozart, and Jolivet for Dutch television.

Rien de Reede gives masterclasses in several countries, including Germany, England, Portugal, Italy, and the USA. In recent years, he has been conducting private lessons both in his studio in Tuscany and in Amsterdam.

Rien de Reede’s expertise as a chamber music coach is highly sought after, particularly for works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinski. He has also served as a coach for orchestral wind sections, including the European Union Youth Orchestra and Festival Junger Künstler in Bayreuth. Additionally, he is a respected jury member in flute and wind competitions.
