Casella Barcarola et Scherzo-Flute and Piano-Salabert (Casella Barcarola and Scherzo-Flute and Piano-Salabert)

Alfredo Casella

Italian composer, pianist, and conductor Alfredo Casella (1883-1947) received his musical education at the Paris Conservatoire under Gabriel Fauré. He played a significant role in the revival of early Italian music and was the founder of the Italian Society of Modern Music.

Casella’s contributions extended beyond composition; he published valuable editions of keyboard works by renowned composers such as J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin. His symphonies from the early period exhibit traces of influence from Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, while his later chamber and orchestral works demonstrate elements inspired by Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky.

Noteworthy compositions include the ballet “La Giara” (1924), orchestral pieces “Scarlattiana” (1926) and “Paganiniana” (1942), the orchestral work “Italia” (1910), the Partita for piano and orchestra (1925), and the Missa Solemnis (1944).
