Bowen Sonata Opus 120-Flute and Piano-Emerson
Bowen Sonata Opus 120-Flute and Piano-Emerson (Revised edition 2000)
This sonata in three movements was written for flautist, Gareth Morris in 1946. It wasn’t until forty years later that this work was actually printed, when Emerson Editions acquired a copy from the York Bowen Society. The first edition contained numerous inconsistencies due to the somewhat erratic manuscript. Over several years following the first edition, a number of contributors revised and produced a new edition which is more faithful to the original manuscript.
Sonata Opus 120 is a romantic and playful work with contrasting moods and energy.
British composer, Edwin York Bowen (1884-1961) was one of the UK’s most renowned pianists and composers of his day. He was also a much respected organist, horn and viola player. His compositional output includes many instrumental duos, chamber music, piano music, four piano concertos, a viola concerto and four symphonies. He later became a Professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
