Lili Boulanger

Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) was a French composer, known as the first woman to win the Prix de Rome composition prize. Born in Paris, she showed remarkable musical talent at a young age, singing melodies by ear at the age of two. Her parents, both musicians, supported her musical education. Lili accompanied her sister Nadia to classes at the Paris Conservatoire and studied various instruments, including piano, violin, cello, and harp. She competed in the Prix de Rome in 1912 and, despite falling ill during her performance, returned the following year to win the composition prize for her cantata Faust et Hélène, based on Goethe’s Faust.

Nadia Boulanger, Lili’s sister and a renowned composer and teacher, played a significant role in her musical development. Lili studied harmony, counterpoint, and composition with notable teachers at the Conservatoire, including Gabriel Fauré. Her compositions were characterised by colourful harmony and instrumentation, influenced by Debussy and Fauré.

Lili’s career was tragically cut short by chronic illness, leading to her death at the age of 24. Despite her untimely passing, she left behind a legacy of remarkable musical works, including the unfinished opera La Princesse Maleine.
