French Composer Mel Bonis was born in Paris (1858-1937). Aged 16, she attended the Paris Conservatoire studying harmony, composition and accompaniment in the same classes as Debussy and Pierne. Famous composer, César Franck gave her piano lessons and championed her compositions.
She composed an extensive repertoire of approximately three hundred works. This encompassed a wide range of piano compositions, spanning from pieces suitable for children to intricate concert pieces, designed for both two-hand and four-hand piano. Her vocal compositions, both secular and religious, were equally impressive, including songs for one or two voices, often set to texts by her lover, Hettich. In the realm of sacred music, she crafted over twenty-five works, the majority of which were acappella choral pieces, while others were accompanied by organ or harp. Her contributions extended to the realm of organ and harmonium, with about thirty compositions in this category. Additionally, she ventured into chamber music, producing around twenty works, including three sonatas, two piano quartets, and a septet, among others. Lastly, her oeuvre included eleven orchestral compositions.
