John Francis Barnett

English composer, John Francis Barnett (1837-1916) was born in London. His father, Joseph Alfred Barnett, was a singing professor, and his uncle, John Barnett, was a renowned composer known as “The Father of English Opera.” His Prussian grandfather, Bernhard Beer, changed his name to Barnett upon arriving in England and was believed to be a cousin of Meyerbeer.

John Francis Barnett displayed exceptional talent as a child prodigy, particularly in extemporisation on the piano. At the age of twelve, he won the first of two Queen’s Scholarships to the Royal Academy of Music, London, and at fifteen, he performed Mendelssohn’s D minor Piano Concerto under Louis Spohr at the New Philharmonic Society.

Later, he studied in Leipzig with Hauptmann, Rietz, and Moscheles, where he had fellow students like Arthur Sullivan and Grieg. During his time in Leipzig, he performed at a students’ concert and at the Gewandhaus in 1860. One remarkable event was when he played at a concert attended by Liszt, who vigorously applauded him when he was called back to the platform.

As his career progressed, Barnett focused on composing and conducting, dedicating his middle and later years to these pursuits. His piano compositions were highly sought-after for performances in 19th-century drawing rooms, often premiered by his sister, Emma Barnett, a talented concert pianist. His first choral work, “The Ancient Mariner,” had a resounding success at the 1867 Birmingham Festival, establishing him as a popular composer of cantatas and oratorios.
