In 1931, William Teasdale Armstrong, a well-regarded craftsman and foreman at C.G. Conn, established a small workshop in Elkhart, Indiana, specialising in flute repairs. His reputation for precision and dedication to high standards quickly grew, leading to requests from professional musicians for custom-made instruments.
This tradition of excellence was carried forward by his son, Edward, who trained under William and shared his meticulous approach to quality. Edward also recognised the importance of making reliable instruments accessible to the increasing number of students and amateur players, not just professionals.
During the 1970s, Armstrong collaborated with Albert Cooper to create a new flute scale. Before this innovation, flute makers typically modified headjoints to raise the pitch from A=435 to A=440, which only improved tuning in the middle register and left other octaves out of tune. The Armstrong-Cooper project resulted in an entirely reworked flute, featuring a tapered headjoint, revised tone hole sizes, and repositioned tone holes. This redesign laid the foundation for the 102, 103, and 104 model flutes still in use today.
In 1984, Armstrong was acquired by King Musical Instruments. The following year, King merged with C.G. Conn to form United Musical Instruments (UMI). In 2002, UMI merged with the Selmer Company, becoming part of Conn-Selmer, Inc.
