Folkers & Powell

Folkers & Powell, the partnership of Catherine Folkers & Ardal Powell, makes copies of flutes from the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Classical and early Romantic periods.

Catherine Folkers earned a B.Mus. degree in modern flute and piccolo from the New England Conservatory, where she also pursued graduate studies in the Performance of Early Music. She began making flutes and recorders in the Prescott workshop in 1975, at the same time studying original instruments in private and public collections. In 1978 she established herself as an independent flutemaker in Ann Arbor, Michigan, returned to Boston in 1981, and by the time she and Ardal Powell became partners six years later, she had made over 150 flutes and piccolos, some of her earliest for well- known orchestras on both sides of the Atlantic.

Ardal Powell is a leading scholar and maker in the field of historical flutes. He co-founded Folkers & Powell, Makers of Historical Flutes, in 1984 and served as President for 25 years, playing a central role in the design, construction, and dissemination of historically informed baroque flutes. Alongside this work, he was founding Editor of TRAVERSO, a quarterly historical flute newsletter that became an important forum for research, performance practice, and instrument scholarship. His research and publications focus on the history of the flute and flute-playing in the baroque and classical periods, combining hands-on knowledge of historical instruments with scholarly study of performance practice and musical culture.

Care Instructions

Caring for Your New Flute – All Flutes Plus Guide

It’s important to look after your flute, and here’s how we at All Flutes Plus recommend you care for it.

  • After each playing session, use the rod and gauze to remove moisture from the inside of the flute. This moisture can damage the pads over time, so drying the instrument thoroughly helps prolong their life.
  • Use the microfibre cloth to wipe down the outside of the flute after playing. This slows down the tarnishing process. Tarnishing is a natural reaction between the silver (or silver plating) and sulphur in the air or on your skin, causing the metal to turn brown or misty. Tarnish will be removed during your regular flute servicing.
  • While we understand that keeping your flute out on display may encourage you to practise more often, leaving it out of its case can increase the chance of tarnishing and physical damage. We strongly recommend placing your flute back in its case after cleaning and playing.
  • We recommend having your flute serviced every 1-2 years depending on how much you play your instrument. Regular servicing keeps your instrument in top playing condition and helps prevent long-term issues.

Headjoint Testing

Headjoints can radically enhance the sound of most flutes. With a vast array of headpieces made by several respected flute makers worldwide, each one differs by its embouchure cut, lip plate and material. Each headjoint offers different qualities, including wide-ranging tonal colours, projection, more/less resistance and ease of articulation. Headjoint choices are entirely subjective! Please note that whilst these head joints are for sale, we advise you to try them before you buy!

Head joints come in lots of shapes and sizes. It is therefore recommended that you try the headjoint either in our testing room at All Flutes Plus or by pre-arranged trial within the comfort of your own home.

At All Flutes Plus, we’ve seen it all — which is why we strongly recommend insuring your flute.

Returns Policy

We want our customers to be completely happy with all purchases from us.  We provide a 14 day period in which to return any items for exchange or refund if they are deemed unsuitable.*  This is subject to the item/s being returned in the same condition they were sent out in, and the item/s being complete with all packaging and component parts.

Warranty

There is no warranty on second-hand instruments. However, if you experience any issues with a second-hand flute purchased from us, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’ll be happy to arrange for our workshop to assess the problem and advise you on the next steps.

When a flute is brought in for sale on commission, we begin by thoroughly testing the instrument and assessing its overall condition. We ensure that all second-hand stock is in fair and fully functional condition prior to listing it for sale. If we determine that any repairs are necessary, we will schedule and carry out the required work before the instrument becomes available for purchase.
