At the age of sixteen he entered Wilberforce University in Ohio, where he gained experience as an instrumentalist and conductor before continuing his musical studies at Oberlin Conservatory. He later studied composition privately with George Chadwick and Edgar Varèse.

Still went on to work as an orchestral musician and arranger alongside leading figures in jazz, vaudeville and dance-band music, including W. C. Handy, Sophie Tucker, Paul Whiteman and Artie Shaw. In 1931, his *Afro-American Symphony* became the first complete work by an African-American composer to be performed by a major American orchestra. Over the course of his career, Still composed nearly 200 works, including five symphonies, operas, ballets, choral music, chamber works and instrumental solos, earning him the title “Dean of Afro-American Composers”.

*Summerland* was originally written in 1935 as the second movement of Still’s piano suite *Three Visions*. The suite depicts the journey of the human soul after death: *Dark Horsemen* represents judgement and the threat of damnation, *Summerland* portrays the promised beauty and tranquillity of the afterlife, and *Radiant Pinnacle* represents spiritual perfection.

Still later arranged *Summerland* for other instrumental combinations, including flute and piano. Gentle and lyrical in character, the work unfolds with a serene atmosphere while retaining subtle traces of the jazz influence that remained an important part of Still’s musical language.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0885/5335/7646/files/ebe8cb7e-8356-42df-9722-6974dd7c6825.jpg?v=1786465137
