He grew up in Surrey, and attended Charterhouse School, the Royal College of Music, and Trinity College, Cambridge, studying under Charles Stanford, Hubert Parry, Max Bruch in Berlin, and Maurice Ravel in Paris.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA pioneer in collecting folk songs and carols from rural singers, he contributed hymn tunes to The English Hymnal. His close friendship with Gustav Holst influenced both composers’ development. During World War I, Vaughan Williams served as a wagon orderly and later as a commission in the Royal Garrison Artillery.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis outlook shifted from youthful atheism to cheerful agnosticism, drawing inspiration from various poets and writers. He married Adeline Fisher in 1897 and Ursula Wood in 1953. In 1935, he received the Order of Merit but declined a knighthood.
