At the age of 20, he marked his debut with the piano piece “Lento in Due Movimenti.” Takemitsu found creative inspiration from exceptional teachers like Toshi Ichiyanagi, who introduced him to the European avant-garde, and Fumio Hayasaka, who acquainted him with film music and connections to Akira Kurosawa.

With an avant-garde style, Takemitsu seamlessly merged diverse art forms such as modern painting, theatre, film, and literature. His compositions featured tape recorder collages and musical depictions of natural phenomena. By masterfully juxtaposing Eastern and Western musical traditions, he often used symbolic metaphors to represent Japanese gardens. Alongside his orchestral and chamber works, Takemitsu ventured into popular music genres like jazz and pop, crafting about a hundred film scores and arranging iconic pop classics in his “12 Songs for Guitar.”

Takemitsu’s illustrious career garnered numerous accolades, including the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, the Glenn Gould Prize, and the UNESCO-IMC Music Prize.
