Largely self-taught as a composer, he initially drew inspiration from Western classical music, particularly composers such as Debussy, before increasingly exploring the relationship between Western musical traditions and the sounds, instruments and aesthetics of Japan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNature, silence and musical colour play an important role throughout Takemitsu’s work, and his distinctive approach can be heard across orchestral, chamber and solo music.
