Lasting approximately seven minutes, it was to become Takemitsu’s final musical work.

Through lyrical, freely unfolding lines and subtle changes of register, dynamics and colour, Air explores the expressive possibilities of the flute with remarkable sensitivity. Moments of stillness and space are as important as the notes themselves, creating an intimate and contemplative work that rewards careful control of tone, breath and phrasing.

The work received its first performance in Oberwil, Switzerland in January 1996, performed by flautist Yasukazu Uemura.

About Tōru Takemitsu

Tōru Takemitsu (1930–1996) was one of the most internationally influential Japanese composers of the twentieth century. Largely self-taught as a composer, he initially drew inspiration from Western classical music, particularly composers such as Debussy, before increasingly exploring the relationship between Western musical traditions and the sounds, instruments and aesthetics of Japan.

Nature, silence and musical colour play an important role throughout Takemitsu’s work, and his distinctive approach can be heard across orchestral, chamber and solo music. He was also a prolific composer for film, writing scores for more than 90 films during his career.

Takemitsu received numerous international honours, including the UNESCO-IMC Music Prize and the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, and his highly individual musical language continues to hold an important place in contemporary repertoire.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0885/5335/7646/files/eyJidWNrZXQiOiJwcmVzdG8tY292ZXItaW1hZ2VzIiwia2V5IjoiOTc1NDgwNi4xLmpwZWciLCJlZGl0cyI6eyJyZXNpemUiOnsid2lkdGgiOjQzMn0sIndlYnAiOnsicXVhbGl0eSI6NjV9LCJ0b0Zvcm1hdCI6IndlYnAifSwidGltZXN0YW1.webp?v=1786620811
