He remained there until 1697 and later travelled to the Netherlands. By 1700, he had settled in England. In 1713, he obtained a doctorate in music from the University of Oxford and became the music director to the Duke of Chandos. During the 1720s, he held the position of music director at Lincoln’s Inn Fields Theatre, where he composed several masques and arranged tunes and overtures for John Gay’s “Beggar’s Opera” (1728) and its sequel “Polly” (unperformed until 1777).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1737, Pepusch became the organist at the Charterhouse. Besides his teaching activities, he amassed an impressive library of music books and scores. His interest in Renaissance and ancient Greek and Roman music strongly influenced early musical antiquarianism in England, contributing to the publication of William Boyce’s anthology “Cathedral Music” from 16th- and 17th-century England.
