Originally scored for solo flute and strings, this version for flute and piano was arranged by Mathias himself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe concerto was commissioned by the Criccieth Festival in association with the Welsh Arts Council and was first performed on 18 June 1992 by the celebrated flautist William Bennett, to whom the work is dedicated, with the Guildhall String Ensemble. Born in Whitland, Wales, he began composing at an early age before studying at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth and later at the Royal Academy of Music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMathias became Professor of Music at Bangor University in 1970 and was also the founder and Artistic Director of the North Wales International Music Festival.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis music is known for its rhythmic vitality, strong sense of colour and distinctive combination of lyrical and energetic writing.
